Passing of Professor Emeritus Ying-shih Yü

The Department of East Asian Studies is greatly saddened to announce the death of Ying-shih Yü, Gordon Wu ’58 Professor of Chinese Studies, Emeritus, and Professor of East Asian Studies and History, Emeritus on Sunday, August 1, 2021. Professor Yü was an internationally renowned scholar of Chinese history who served at Princeton from 1987 until his retirement in 2001 and remained an active member of the Princeton community long after his retirement. Among his many accolades, Professor Yü was awarded the John W. Kluge Prize for lifetime achievements in the study of humanity in 2006. He was also the inaugural winner of the Tang Prize in Sinology in 2014, awarded by the Academia Sinica, "for his mastery of and insight into Chinese intellectual, political, and cultural history with an emphasis on his profound research into the history of public intellectuals in China.”
