Japanese History
Bio/Description

Joseph Henares is a Ph.D. candidate in modern Japanese history. In his dissertation, he hopes to look into what has been called "Iwanami culture," the intellectual culture associated with publishing house Iwanami Shoten and the writers, books, and magazines affiliated with it, with regard to its role in shaping horizons of thought from interwar to postwar Japan. He is broadly interested in print culture, intellectual history, the history of philosophy, twentieth-century transnational intellectual exchange, the dynamics of wartime censorship, and responses to modernity.
