Email Address:

Kaoru Hayashi (EAS) works on premodern Japanese literature, especially in the genre of monogatari (tales or narratives). She is especially interested in supernatural or strange phenomenon and creatures (e.g. mononoke, monsters, vengeful spirits), in the context of genealogy ofmonogatari. Her work blends the disciplines of literature, history and religion in order to explore concealed and unnarrated politics, power and genealogies embedded in literary depictions of monsters and strange occurrences. By combining her work experience in theatre, film and media industries in Japan and US with her interest in issues surrounding Area studies, Kaoru aims to extend the relevancy of her research topic to contemporary issues.
